MEANING
OF TEACHING
Germany introduce the first formal criteria
for the education of teacher in the 18th century .In the 19th
century, as society became more industrialized. The concept of schooling became
more universal. Traditionally, parents, elders, religious leaders and sages
were responsible for teaching children how to behave and thing and what to
believe.
Teaching is undertaking certain ethical
tasks or activities through teaching
.The teacher aims at giving some knowledge to the students passing some
information to them, making the student acquire some skill, changing the attitude of the learners,
modifying the behavior of the students, and
giving some experience of life.
Teaching is relatively a new profession.
Teaching help to the pupil to understand the realities properly, so they may
adjust in a better way , it enabling pupils to establish contact with the truth
and thereby helping in decision making process making pupil the best workers
and thinkers, it giving pupil new experiences to perform some constructive
task.
Teaching is the system of action intended
to induce learning. Teaching like other several sciences, is a complex
activity. It involves organized series of acts to achieve a defined objective. Logically,
a sequence in these acts is a must, but the consequences of the act & the
act to follow are determined by pupil response to the preceding act. The
sequence of act depicts precise planning is to be adapted to the new demands of
pupil response. Alphabetic presentation of principles of teaching follow the
sequence is not due to pupil response but due to the selected mode.
Teaching is the essential act of a
teacher, mainly carried out within the environment of school or college or
university or institution of society. Therefore, the teacher does a service to
the students either individually or in a groups& this he does in a formal
& systematic manner by & large, one thinks of teaching as an act of
instruction in the formal situation of a classroom.

TEACHING
According to
Gaze,” Teaching is a form of interpersonal influence aimed at changing the
behavior potential of another person “.

on explains, “Teaching is an interactive process ,primarily involving classroom
talk which takes place between teacher &pupil that occurs during certain definable activity.”

Broacher” Teaching is an arrangement
& manipulation of a situation in which there are gaps &
obstructions which an individual will seeks to overcome & from which he
learn in the course of doing so”.

world book of Encyclopedia, the process by which one person helps another achieves
knowledge, skills& aptitude”.

little oxford dictionary, impart knowledge or skills, give instruction or lessons,
instill and inspire with.”

Ryan,”Teaching is concerned with the guidance or direction of the learning of
other”.
FUNCTIONS OF TEACHING
Teaching is a continuous & purposeful process. Three types of
functions are performed by teaching. They are diagnostic, remedial and
evaluative.
1 DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION
The teacher decides about the pupils entering- behavior and the
teaching objectives can be achieved on its basis. On the basis of diagnosis the
teacher takes decision about the needed prescription for achieving stipulated
objectives. Then he arranges the elements of the contents to be taught in a
sequence by analyzing them logically, So that the teaching activity may be
performed in a psychological sequence. Accomplishment of objectives needs an
appropriate interaction between the teacher and students. Diagnostic function
is the foundation of the remedial aspects of teaching.
2- REMEDIAL FUNCTION
In this type, an effort is made to bring the desired changes in
the behavior of the pupils. Hence the teacher should make decisions regarding
the use of teaching methods, strategies and tactics and mutual relationships
between various variables keeping in view the individual difference of the pupils. In these aspects assistance must be sought from action research in
order to solve the various which arise during the teaching. Thus in remedial
function the teacher should manage the teaching variables in such a way that the
maximum teaching techniques are tactics.

EVALUATIVE FUNCTION
In this,
diagnostic aspect is evaluated. It should be remembered that the criteria of evaluation,
is the achievement of the objectives. If the objectives are achieved, the
remedy by the teacher is correct, otherwise is defective. In other words, if
the teaching objectives are not achieved, teacher should not blame pupils for
his “in a failure he should change the variables of diagnostic aspect so that
the objectives may be achieved.
