DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HARDWARE &
SOFTWARE APPROACH.
There are mainly three approaches in
Educational Technology. They are Hardware approach, Software approach &
System approach. Hardware approach & Software approach plays a very
essential role in the Educational Technology. These approaches in Educational
Technology are briefly discussed below:
HARDWARE APPROACH
It refers to the use of machines & other mechanical
devices in the process of education. Its origin lies in the application of
“physical science” to education & training system. The process of teaching-learning
has been gradually mechanized through the use of teaching machines, radio,
television, tape recorder, video-tape, projectors etc. The teacher can deal
with a larger & larger group of students at the same time by his discourse
through these machines. Now, the educational & training systems are able to
deal with increased number & the cost per students has thus been reduced by
the hardware approach to education.
HARDWARE APPROACH IN
BULLETIN.

The
concept of hardware approach is derived from the application of “physical
science” to education.
·
The
hardware approach of education includes the use of ‘mechanical device’ &
‘machine’ in education like computer, television, radio etc.
·
In
this sense audio-visual affect like model, television, radio, charts, slides,
projector, computer, printer etc. come under this category of the Hardware
approach.
·
The
teacher can deal with larger group of students with the help of these
‘Mechanical device’ or ‘Machines’.
·
Engineering
principles are used for the development of these types of technical equipments.
·
We
take an example for hardware approach “blood circulation”.
:- while teaching the topic Blood
circulation the teacher uses the graphical representation video clips has shown
to the students.
SOFTWARE APPROACH
Software approach refers to the
application of teaching- learning principles to the direct & deliberate
shaping of behavior. Its origin lies in the application of “behavior science”
to the problems of learning & motivation. This view of educational
technology is closely associated with the modern principles & theories of
teaching. Models of teaching, theory of instruction, theory of teacher-
behavior & principles of programmed learning. It is characterized by task
analysis, writing, objectives in behavioral terms, selection of the appropriate
teaching strategies, reinforcement for correct responses & continuous
evaluation.
Though
thus there is difference in the aspects being stressed the hardware & software
approaches in educational technology are functionally related to each other.
SOFTWARE APPROACH IN BULLETIN.

Origin
of software approach lies in the application of ‘behavioral science’ to the
education.
·
It
refers to the application of teaching- learning principles in the shaping of
behavior.
·
We
can views its application while writing objectives in behavioral terms,
selection of appropriate teaching, strategies, reinforcement for correct
response etc.
